New U.S.-China Deal Temporarily Lowers Tariffs on Travel Goods

Published on May 12, 2025

May 12, 2025 – Big news this morning: President Trump has announced a temporary tariff “deal” with China that could significantly impact travel goods imports. Please read the full update below:

Today (May 12), the United States and China announced a “deal” (Fact Sheet) to temporarily lower tariffs between the United States and China.

The “deal” temporarily lowers tariffs on U.S. imports from China from 145% to 30% and temporarily lowers tariffs on U.S. exports to China from 125% to 10%.

The lower tariffs go into effect for goods entering the United States on May 14 and will remain in place until August 12 (90 days).

· We are still waiting for specific guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

· Note that these tariffs are “stacked” on top of current tariffs. Examples:

  • Textile duffel bags/handbags from China – 17.6% normal tariff + 25% Section 301 tariff + 20% Trump 2 fentanyl tariff + 10% “reciprocal” tariff = 72.6% total tariff.
  • Hardsided luggage from China – 20% normal tariff + 25% Section 301 tariff + 20% Trump 2 fentanyl tariff + 10% “reciprocal” tariff = 75.0% total tariff.

Separately, negotiations continue between the U.S. and other major sourcing countries – Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Indonesia, etc.

  • President Trump has said other deals, like last week’s U.S.-UK deal, will be announced in the next few weeks.
  • In the meanwhile, U.S. travel goods imports from those countries remain subject to additional 10% “reciprocal” tariffs.
