Trump Imposes Immediate Tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada; Reciprocal Tariffs Expected April 2

Published on March 4, 2025

Today (March 4), President Trump imposed new 10% tariffs, effective immediately, on all U.S. imports from China and 25% tariffs on virtually all U.S. imports from Mexico and Canada.

The new 10% tariffs on U.S. imports from China are on top of the 10% tariff imposed on China on February 4 and on top of the 25% section 301 tariffs imposed by President Trump in his first administration.

Again, the new tariffs are effective immediately. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), de minimis shipments are exempt from the new tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada.

Separately, President Trump has proposed “reciprocal tariffs“ on countries that charge higher tariffs on U.S. products than the U.S. does on their products. This could affect U.S. travel goods imports from Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and other key sourcing countries. It remains unclear how President Trump will calculate these reciprocal tariffs, or whether President Trump will target all countries with reciprocal tariffs, or just certain countries. An announcement on reciprocal tariffs, with possible implementation of those tariffs, is expected on April 2.

This is a fast evolving situation. TGA will work to keep everyone informed of the changing situation. TGA will also discuss the tariff situation at the Travel Goods Show in Las Vegas on March 25-27. See the time, date, and location of this session here.
